Copying software from laptop onto Microsoft Surface

Natalie Feb 21, 2014 11:39PM EST

I recently purchased a Microsoft Surface and would like to use it at scrapbook crops with my MTC. I have an older version, so that it still works with my cricut. I read that since I have purchased MTC I can use it on more than one device as long as i'm only using one at a time. How do I get the software onto my surface? Thank you!

First, we need to know what "Surface" you purchased. There are different "Surface" tablets available. Some run a limited Windows version on them called "Windows RT." Others like the Surface Pro 2 that I have runs a full blown Windows 8 on them. If you have the Surface that is running the limited Windows RT then you will not be able to put full blown software like MTC onto your Surface Tablet. Since I have a Surface Pro 2, that runs with full blown Windows, then I was able to install MTC, their new Pop-up Card Studio as well as Scrappy's ScrapFactory programs on them and run them with no problems.

Second, you are correct - you can use MTC on more than one device as long as you are using it on only one system at a time and they are all devices you own.

Third, the final issue for you may be that you are running an older version of MTC to cut to the no longer supported cutter from PC. What version of MTC you are using is important. The older the version, the less likely it will work in this scenario. The old version may or may not work with Windows 8 as it was never written for or supported with that version. Again, IF you are running full blown Windows 8 - then it may be possible but you will have to test it and see. I have not seen anyone state that they were running on older version with that cutter on a Windows 8 machine. There are a number of threads and previously recorded Webinars on the MTC forum that discuss copying an old version of MTC to a new computer. I would suggest that you look there for specific information on attempting to copy to a new system. However, before you attempt to use your cutter with MTC from your surface, I would first suggest that you try to run your cutter with one of PC's online programs and make sure it will work with the Surface in general before attempting to go further and install MTC. If you can get it to work from your Surface with PC's program(s), then you can attempt to try and get MTC downloaded to it and see if you can get it to work.

So, as you can see there are a lot of "details" that need to be known and figured out before you will know if this would work for you or not. Good luck.
